Ivan becomes obsessed with property, money and social status. He does what a man of his status should do including taking a wife and having children. Ivan missed out on what was important in life. Ivan distances himself from anything he deems as unpleasant including his pregnant wife and all the challenging moments in life that would made his life worth living.
