Ivan Ilych can't wrap his mind around his death. Not only can he not comprehend what ceasing to be would really mean, he can't understand how he could be the victim of such an enormous injustice. "It cannot be that I ought to die. That would be too terrible" (6.3).

"Why?"

This is the question tat continually haunts Ivan Ilyich during the end of his life. He wants to know why he must die; has he done anyhting worng? Is this why he is dying? No. He is dying because he is. Ivan also does not want to accept that fact that he has never really lived his life; he only existed. However, inside, Ivan knows that this s true, but will not admit it. By keeping this facts locked inside him, Ivan goes through a terrible trauma; one that can stop only if he allows it to.
