Comprehension

 Tom is anxious because his wife is yet to come home. Tom ventures into the Indian forest to look for her. He sees crows clamoring at a bundle in a tree. Tom climbs the tree and retrieves the bundle. In it he finds his wife's heart and liver inside. Not a good sign!  Tom looks at the base of the tree and finds evidence of a struggle around the base of the tree.

He shrugged his shoulders and he looked at the signs of a fierce clapperclawing. "Egad," said he to himself. "Old Scratch must have had a tough time of it!"
