What unexpected sight greeted them when they arrived at the train station?

In Chapter Ten, the trucks transporting the Jews stop outside the station and soldiers with guns tell the frightened villagers to get out and board the waiting boxcars. As they exit the trucks, the villagers notice the discarded belongings of others on the side of the road. Bags, clothing, and other personal items litter the scene.
