Willem Van Maaren takes over as warehouse manager in 1943 after the previous manager, Johan Voskuijl, falls very ill. Although he is unaware of the people hiding in the building, he does have suspicions that something is amiss. At one point he had laid a rather hackneyed trap to catch them.
