Anne changes in many ways throughout the two years that she writes this diary. She becomes a better writer. She also becomes an observer of politics and human nature. Often she displays an empathy well beyond her years for others. Although she has the regular angst of an adolescent girl, her entries seem to become less and less about herself and more about the world at large. Anne even comes to understand her mother more as a person rather than her personal antagonist.
