WW2, the Holocaust, and the Jewish experience during that time add to the very meaning of what Ann writes. Knowing the historical context helps the reader establish the setting and human conflicts before our teenage protagonist begins her diary. We already understand the horrors of what Anne and the people in her flat are up against should they be discovered.
