How did reading the afterword affect your feelings about anne and the people you read about in the diary?

I think it is difficult for me to comprehend what they went through. Anne and the others went through an abberation of humanity the likes of which I can't even imagine. If anything, I can at least appreciate how strong and resolute they were.
