Anne's diary chronicles her growth from the child who goes into the Secret Annexe to the very thoughtful, much more grown near woman who is captured by the Nazis. She writes about feelings (which are numerous at her age), reflects on the experiences her family is having (which shows her much more philosophical than many her age would be), and talks about those things (her feelings for Peter, for example), which would be typical for her age were she simply out in society. Her diary shows us her growth during the time they are in their hideout.
