Why did Anne become so fond of Peter?

Anne's feelings for Peter began to change in February of 1944. Anne first notices the way Peter looks at her, a pleasant surprise, considering she always believed that he was in love with Margot. She also enjoys the way he treats her, as well as the fact he seems to need looking after. She sees his insecurities and feels her affection can help to eliminate them.
