The Drover's Wife

The Drover's Wife - assignment

I have an assignment for the course Selected Issues in Cultural Studies of English-speaking Countries on the ending of the text The Drover's Wife (link to file with this text here: https://1drv.ms/w/s!AqHxIZYovq4YqCZ-W182J7S0HZKd?e=doNgfb) and I need answers to 4 questions immediately.

1. Why do you think the drover’s wife is not mentioned by her name?

2. What it is in the story that Australians would like to see as qualities in themselves?

3. Based on who is included and excluded in this story, what conclusions can you draw about the role of women in Australian society. Compare this text with free settlers.

4. The Drover’s Wife was first published on 23 July 1892 in The Bulletin magazine. Comment on the language of the short story. Which aspect of Australian English does it represent? Support your answer with examples from the text. Why was that literary style important? What evolution was Australian English undergoing at that time?

Why do you think the drover’s wife is not mentioned by her name?

I think she has no name because the wife is meant to represent all bush women rather than a specific person.

You need to submit these questions one at a time. Thanks!
