How could the Grandpa be white, but see the world through Cherokee eyes?

I just wanted to know how the grandfathers choose not to like his life through his American culture but choose to view life through his Cherokee culture and beliefs.

Granpa is Little Tree's Scottish-Cherokee grandfather whom he is sent to live with. Grandpa sees the world trough his Cherokee heritage even though he looks white.
