Why do both granpa and the woman asking for directions to Chattanooga each think the other is crazy?

Grandpa is cordial but never answers the lady's question. She gets angry, and Grandpa just continues on. He's never been to Chattanooga, and he doesn't know how to get there. She thinks he's crazy, and her behavior makes her seem crazy as well.
