The narrator, an older man, is a writer.... like the young girl. He is knowledgeable about publishing, writing, and the necessary traits that are linked to authors as a whole. The speaker's wisdom directly contrasts with the young woman's inexperience and naivety. She already presumes herself to be a best-selling author, with a constant stream of royalties. The speaker, however, is already aware that an advance is meaningless in terms of publication, and that it does not insure either royalties or book sales. As an older, wiser man, the speaker supports her fiance's desire to procure a job through which he can support them, and he believes her time would be better spent facing reality instead of focusing on dreams.
