How does the author’s initial view of the House of Usher set the mood for the rest of the story?

When the narrator first sees Usher's home, he sees nothing but a decrepit, decaying, mass..... it is gloomy.... and he is filled with a sense of dread. The gloomy sight that greets him sets the dark and dreary mood that will permeate the rest of the story.
