What does Poe accomplish by blurring the boundaries between the family and its house?

Certainly the House of Usher personifies Roderick and his sister. The house has been in the family for generations since its inception. As the house deteriorates so does the occupants. The gothic decay of the house matches the mental and physical decay of Roderick and the post death grim chaos of his sister.
