Hazel asks about Caroline and Augustus tells the story of seeing her on the hospital playground from his hospital room and her being moody and miserable, perhaps because of her personality or perhaps because of her cancer and its specific effects on her mind and emotions. As he got better, she got worse, and he stayed together with her even in her last year of life when she would call him names and even repeat the same mean things over and over due to short-term memory problems.
