What is the meaning of Reef keeping the stone and not throwing it?

Reef wasn't sure why he kept the stone, but he had it because it was the first stone he'd picked up since his grandmother's death that he hadn't thrown..... he had no desire to throw it, and no need to throw it..... it was something to hold onto.
