A major motif through this book is atonement and reconciliation with the past. Eddie must understand and reconcile his pain before he can move on in his journey into the afterlife. The Blue Man's mission is to help Eddie in order to move on in his (The Blue Man's) own journey. These conflicts play out within all characters to different extents.
