Love is not always easy or pleasant. Sometimes love must rely on the water in its roots to stay alive. Albom uses the metaphor of a plant relying on the water (nurture) deep within to stay alive. This is the same with Marriage and couples. During hard times, people must survive from the roots of their relationship.

Love, like rain, can nourish from above, drenching couples with a soaking joy. But sometimes, under the angry heat of life, love dries on the surface and must nourish from below, tending to its roots, keeping itself alive.
