Why does Eddie come upon the children in the river

Are you referring to Chapter 12 - The Last Lesson? Eddie sees Tala and other children playing in the river. I think the river is symbolic of so many things. The river represents change in life and in death; the washing away of guilt and sin (Eddie needs this), and just children having fun in the water.
