A young girl of nineteen. She has been burdened with care of her younger siblings and father, who mistreats her. She works hard and is very poor. But a marriage with Frank promises a way out for her. By contrast MissBrill is a lonely woman who spends every Sunday at the public gardens listening to the conversations of others, never taking part herself. She is the main character of the eponymous “Miss Brill,” and the only one of consequence. The other characters are as nameless, as they are interchangeable in the fantasy Miss Brill has created for herself.
