By taking a pill that reduces emotions (pill that community took), how would that prevent depression?

I see no evidence that the "pill" used to prevent stirrings in the novel, The Giver, was used to prevent depression. The "pill" was used to stiffle sexual attraction..... feeling based upon lust and hormones.
