During the course of the novel, Gabe is pretty much raised within Jonas' household. This is far different that the other infants. Jonas becomes friend, brother, and a source of comfort. The other infants don't have that. Thus, Gabe forms bonds of trust and love with the brother who sneaks him out of bed and talks to him when he's fretting. Gabe yearns for closeness because he's experienced Jonas' unconditional love and protection.
