Lois Lowry at times leaves events that should be familiar to readers unidentified. For example, she doesn't identify the Giver's memories of a winter holiday as Christmas. Why do you think she makes this choice?

I think she wants the reader to infer certain information which gives the reader a more personal sense of the memory filled with personal nostalgia. This connects the reader to the memories in that Jonas is given in a more visceral way.
