Calling attention to differences in other community members was considered rude because it made them feel different and might have made them feel bad about themselves. This community was based upon sameness. People were taught that it was good to be the same, and it was bad to be singled out or different. Success in the community revolved around what they all had in common.... to be uncommon would mean you didn't belong.
