These few sentences encapsulate Jonas' predicament. He has received various memories from the Giver, and in his desire to settle Gabriel has shared some of them. The Giver
Jonas was honorably chosen by the elders to be what is called a receiver, an important person who collects memories from the Giver, both painful and pleasurable. He discovers a lot about his community and how much different it is from how he was taught. His younger brother, Gabriel was in danger of release, so he and Gabe would run away in search of another community.
