What does the custom of replacing a " lost " child show about Jonas's society

Once a baby like Caleb is lost (dies),  another baby takes its place. That baby is named and treated like the baby that was lost. This shows a society that is brain washed and controlled by the Elders to perform and believe very bizarre ideas.
