Jonas becomes attached to Gabriel and does not want the baby to be "released" (killed) the next morning. He decides he must escape to save Gabriel's life. He does not yet have every bit of knowledge he needs, but he runs away and ultimately ends up with a life in the home of a family whose house is warn and decorated.
