What was the plan in Chapter 20?

In Chapter Twenty, we learn that Jonas is planning to leave. He is going to meet with the Giver.... to receive the Giver's memories of courage and strength. Then, he is going to leave for Elsewhere. Jonas plans to leave in two weeks at the stroke of midnight. Everyone else will be at the ceremony, thus, he will have a better chance to get away without being missed. The Giver is going to call for a car and a supply of food. After Jonas is gone, the Giver will return to the Ceremony and tell everyone that Jonas was lost in the river. Hopefully, he will have enough time to get away.
