Stirrings are a natural part of growing up, but in Jonas' society pills are used to alleviate these hormonal reactions. In Jonas' society, marriages are arranged, specific woman are allowed to give birth, children are not raised by their biological parents. Emotions are stiffled.... romance doesn't exist. Stirrings are often an effect of attraction..... something Jonas' society doesn't want to exist in their world.
