Why do you think the Giver seems sad at the end of Jonas's first day of his training?

I think that the old man knows the pain that Jonas is in store for. Years of being the Giver has rendered the old man tired frail. The Giver knows what happened to Rosemary (his daughter) the Receiver of Memories before Jonas: she could not handle the intense pain.
