Jonas' society controls every aspect of their lives in their desire for sameness. Families are ordered, a husband and wife... and two children, a boy and a girl. Parents are meant to raise the children, not to have the children. When the children grow up, the marriage is dissolved. It's like a working parentship in which the marriage is based upon compatability and companionship. They don't have to be in love, they simply have to want children and fit as a couple. Love, in fact, is an unknown entity. After couples are matched, they have three years to decide if they want to be together before applying to raise a child.
