Why doesn't the Giver respond to Jonas's comment about understanding what pain is? chapter 9-11

I think the Giver is concerned what is in store for Jonas. He knows that Jonas has not even begun to understand the extent of the pain he will feel. The Giver also has painful recolections of his own daughter's inability to handle this job.
