All the characters deal with conflict. Jeannette and her siblings must constantly deal with neglect and even abuse from their parents. Jeannette, for example, must deal with her father throwing her into a lake to learn how to swim. There isn't much the children can do about their life when they are children. They simply cope the way children do. They all leave the parents as soon as they are old enough to be on their own.
