I think that the Walls children were forced to be resilient simply because their childhood was a chaotic mess. This resilience might come in handy later in life but it came with a heavy price. The emotional and often physical suffering they endured during childhood was damaging. Having little stability in terms of place and parenting meant the Walls kids had to navigate their maturation on their own.
