The Glass Castle
Describe Grandma Smith? How is she similar and different to her daughter? How does Jeannette feel about her grandma? What does she find out about her Grandma?
grandma?
grandma?
Grandma Smith (Lilly Smith) is Rose Mary’s mother and a former teacher. She is the opposite of her daughter and is very particular about how things should be done. Grandma Smith’s strictness is partly to blame for Rose Mary’s lenient and flexible parenting style. Throughout their travels, the Walls family would sometimes stay in Grandma Smith’s house in Phoenix.
Jeanette loves her grandmother dearly, and Grandma Smith makes no secret that Jeanette is her favorite grandchild. While the family is driving to Phoenix, Jeanette asks her mother if they're going to stay with Grandma Smith while they're there...... it is at that point, Rosemary tells Jeanette her grandmother is dead (she couldn't have been more tactful).

She was the mother of Jeanette's Mom and her Uncle Jim, and was a schoolteacher in Yampi. Jeanette's mom hated being teacher's daughter and hated following rules. She had strong opinions of how to dress, talk, organize time, cook, and to manage finances. Jeanette loved Grandma Smith because she said she was her favorite grandchild and when growing up will be something special. Unforetunately Jeanette found out she passed away and was a little shocked.
Grandma Smith was a well organized and strict mother, she believed that rules must be follow to keep order. Rose Mary her daughter was the opposite she felt her children didn't need rules, and could raise their self's. Jeanette loved her Grandma for the structure she brought to her life. She was shocked to learn that Grandma smith passed away, and her parents didn't bother to tell her.
