How does Jeannette react to Billy's assault? Why doesn't she tell her father about it?

Jeannette returns the ring Billy gave her and tells him she wants nothing to do with him anymore. Unfortunately, Billy retaliates by shooting his BB gun at her window. Jeannete fears her father would do something rash and impulsive that would get him in a lot of trouble if she told him.
