The Glass Castle
Jeanette makes a big request to her father. She asks, “Do you think you could maybe stop drinking?”
What was she thinking, feeling, and hoping? Do you think her request will make a difference to her father?

Jeanette believes that if her father will only stop drinking, she will once again have the father she loves. What she doesn't understand is that her request will not solve the problem. Rex's extensive drinking is an illness and not easily overcome. In my opinion, Rex would love to say yes.... he loves Jeannette, and yet, he is also selfish, looking to himself and what he wants first.
