Jeannette never complains or feels sorry for herself. Why do you think this is?

I'm not sure what chapter you are referring to, but Jeanette has great strength of character, as a young woman she was mature.... knowing that for the most part, she and her siblings were on their own. The children learned to stick together and look out for each other because their parents rarely fulfilled that role in their lives.
