should the wells children have been allowed to be emancipated from their parents

That probably would have been in their best interest. The problem is they really didn't know life any differently until they could understand "normality" when they were older. Their childhood was pretty dysfunctional but one wonders if a different situation would have been worse. I know it's hard to top these parents for dysfunction but it is possible.
