This is only a short answer space. I can only make a general comment. Nonconformity can be healthy and progressive but unfortunately the Walls parents use nonconformity to hide behind abuse and neglect of their children. Just about everything they did seems unexpected because they were mentally unbalanced. Rex throwing his daughter, Jeannette, in a lake to teach her how to swim can be seen as unexpected but really shows his abuse and unbalanced mind.
