It is amazing that the Walls children turn out as functional as they do. I think that is part of the interest in the story. The children's resilience and adaptability is quite astounding. One can ask; did the Walls parents do something right? Poverty and chaos simply became their life. The Walls children are able to absorb their mistreatment and, like Jeannette, thrive in adult life. I think readers are fascinated with this.
