The Glass Castle
the glass castle
Though it protrays an incredibly hardscrabble life, The Glass Castle is never sad or depressing; in fact, the author has "been able to transform her sad memories into fine art" (People). Discuss the tone of the book. What authorial techniques did Walls use to achieve that effect? Be sure to apply literay terms (on your handouts and in the handouts section of this site) to individual passages and cite the work. While brainstorming, you may need to consider that the two major pieces of the memoir--one half set in the desert and one half in West Virginia--feel distinct. You'll want to address the shift in the book's tone.
