The bullies at school call her ugly, dirty and poor: Jeannette thinks they have a point.

She thinks she is ugly for a lot of reasons (page 213) but most of all her bucked teeth. Jeanette even goes as far to create makeshift braces for herself to wear at night to straighten up her teeth.
