What is ironic about the fact that Dad “owed the mine company eleven cents” and that “he thought it was funny and told them to put it on his tab” ?

Dad was never one to settle his debts. He collected his family and took off without paying them. Dad seems to take a sort of pride in this: of taking advantage of the perceived rich. This is why he thought it funny putting a mere eleven cents on his tab.
