what is life like for the kids in new york city

The kids generally flourish in New York City without their parents. Jeannette gets a job in a restaurant and eventually an internship to finish high school at a newspaper. She finally gets her bachelor's degree in Liberal Arts at Barnard College. Her siblings do much better in New York than they did with their parents.
