What is the culture, or lifestyle, of the desert as described by Walls?

The family, while living in the desert, is incredibly poor. The desert, by its very nature is hard on its inhabitants with its dry climate, inhumanely hot temperatures, and unforgiving living conditions. The family has nothing to look forward to and lives a desolate life.
