what kind of person would you characterize Jeanette as in the first half of the book?

Jeanette's identity is born out of hard times, abuse, neglect but also love from her siblings and periodically from her parents. I think Jeanette really develops a sense of resilience by the middle of the novel. She could have been destroyed by her neglect but in a way, she flourishes by processing everything and becoming stronger.
