Tom's heritage?
In Scene 6 Tom tell us about his high school education, and that it is now six years later. As far as heritage goes, Tom is clearly from a formerly "higher class" family, which is indicated through several clues in the play: Amanda discussing her many gentleman suitors in her youth which indicates her family was likely wealthier, and the fact that Tom was initially considered "aloof" by his warehouse co-workers given his penchant for writing poetry, which is an activity usually associated with more education.
